Nitish's nine lives: Prohibition is the desperate provincial politician's penultimate port of call. His last resort, of course, is the Bharatiya Janata Party. And so it was with Nitish Kumar. From being Indian secularism's homegrown mukhda, he became Hindutva's secular mukhota. Other people wear masks to look like Modi; Nitish devolved into Narendra while wearing his own face. I can see Amit Shah and the prime minister competing for the right to inhabit the shell of the neta-once-known-as-Nitish; however much you enjoy being the bearded heavy, the chance to hang out in virtuous, stubbly, secularist drag must be irresistible.
