Wind

Flow of gases on a large scale constitutes a wind. Winds may be due to bulk movement of gases in the atmosphere and also due to the movement of gases and charged particles in outer space. The latter type of movement is called a solar wind. Solar winds are formed by the expulsion of charged particles from the upper atmosphere of the sun.

This in itself, can lead to other phenomena such as the formation of heliosphere around the sun, geomagnetic storms and comets.

Comet

Bodies comprising of ice, rocks and dust that orbit the solar system are called comets. When comets go near the Sun, the solar winds and radiation from the sun provide a temporary nebulous atmosphere around the nucleus of the comet known as the coma and a tail due to the ionization of the gases.
The word comet is derived from the Latinisation of the Greek word kometes which means ‘long-haired’. Aristotle first used this term to describe comets which were then known as ‘stars with hair’.

WATER FLOW ON MARS SUGGESTS ANCIENT LIFE ON PLANET

Narrow ridges found in Martian craters may actually be fossilised remnants of underground cracks through which water once flowed on the red planet, a new study claims.

Water flowing beneath the surface of ancient Mars suggests life may once have been possible on the Red planet, according to a new analysis by researchers from Brown University.

The study, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, bolsters the idea that the subsurface environment on Mars once had an active hydrology and could be a good place to search for evidence of past life.

GOOGLE

Google

Google Inc. is an internet-giant that provides product and services that are related to the World Wide Web. I mentioned Chrome when we were talking about Firefox; it is a product of Google. You might have searched for something when you are looking for particular information; you would have probably taken to Google search. Internet search, cloud computing, email, advertising, social networking,... you name it and chances are that you are probably using one of Google’s services.

While it is an established fact that Google is amongst the biggest players in the software side, it is also increasingly becoming a hardware company through various partnerships. It’s high-end Nexus series of devices are being brought out through major electronics manufacturers. Also, as part of the Google Fiber broadband internet service project, it is involved in the construction of fibre-optic infrastructure in Kansas City.

FIREFOX

Firefox

Which browser do you use while surfing the internet? I am a die-hard user of Chrome these days, but before it made its way, I used to be faithful to Mozilla Firefox. Firefox is an open source free web browser that works across different operating systems including Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux.

Since its release in 2004, Firefox has been adopted by millions of people and has been downloaded over a billion times. It enjoys 20-24 % worldwide share of web browsers, which makes it the second or third most widely used web browser. The Mozilla Corporation and Mozilla Foundation, that coordinates and manages the Firefox releases, have affiliations with a number of organisations, including Google and Microsoft.

TELANGANA ISSUE

The UPA government has perhaps got more than what it bargained for from the committee it set up, headed by the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice J.S. Verma, in the wake of the public outrage following the horrific Delhi gang rape. The government had decided on only limited terms of reference for the committee (whose other members were an equally eminent former Supreme Court judge, Justice Leila Seth, and former Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam) but fortunately the members, in their words, interpreted it “expansively.”

HAIL

Hail

Hail stones are balls or pellets of ice. They have to be at least 5 millimetres in diameter to qualify as hail stones. Sometimes, hail stones can be so big that they are like golf balls falling from the sky! How does hail form? Hail needs a seed. It can be a speck of pollen or dust. These specks get swept into the atmosphere along with water vapour. The water freezes in the higher regions of the atmosphere and layers of ice form on this seed to become a hail stone.

It’s been found that bacteria from the Earth can live quite happily on these hailstones. Bacterial colonies could even act as the seed for these hailstorms to form. In geographical regions that fall in the mid-latitudes, hail forms in the interior of continents and, in tropical regions, hail can form at high elevation points during storms.

CONTINENTAL CLIMATE

Continental climate

Very cold winters, hot summers and moderate rainfall are the features of continental climate. These extremes of temperature are due to the fact that there are no oceans nearby to moderate the climate.

Parts of north Asia, northern Europe, southern Canada and the northern part of the U.S. experience continental climate. Poland, Austria, Sweden, Turkey, Slovakia and Hungary are some of the countries that share continental climate. The southern hemisphere of the globe does not experience this kind of climate because it has water bodies to exert a moderating influence.

POLAND

Poland

Poland is a country is Central Europe. Its capital is Warsaw. The people are referred to as Poles and they speak Polish. A famous Pole is also a famous astronomer. Can you guess who? It’s Nicolaus Copernicus, who was the first to propose that the Earth moved around the sun and not vice-versa. Poland suffered much damage in World War II but has shown remarkable development and has, today, achieved a very high standard of human development. Poland is a high income country and has not been affected by the recession in Europe. It has several international airports and its Warsaw airport is the global hub of LOT Polish airlines. LOT is the only European airline that used the Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which were recently grounded.

Boeing 787 Dreamliners

Boeing 787 Dreamliners

These jet planes have recently been in the midst of controversy. The Boeing 787 Dreamliners are long range, wide body planes made by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The company said they were better than Boeing 777 planes because they were light and far more fuel-efficient. Several companies ordered the Dreamliners when it was announced in 2008. There were several delays in the product delivery, which finally happened in late 2012. However, operational problems started cropping up when the planes were put into service. There were electrical faults and fuel leakage complaints. Now, several aviation agencies have issued notifications that the jet liners be grounded.

KUMBH MELA

Kumbh Mela

Kumbh Mela is a famous pilgrimage fair which is held once in three years in Haridwar, Prayag, Nasik and Ujjain. Each of these holy towns hosts this gala event once in twelve years. Kumbh (in Hindi) means pitcher and Mela means fair.

The duration of this fair is one and half months. Hindu mythology has it that drops of nectar fell from the pitcher carried by gods during the churning of the ocean of milk. This is mentioned in the epic, Mahabharata.

Kumbh Mela is often declared as the biggest gathering on Earth. These small cities begin preparing months in advance to be able to manage the huge crowd.  Lots of people take a holy dip during the auspicious days of the Mela.

The rivers at these four places are Ganges at Haridwar, Sangam (confluence of Ganga, Yamuna) at Prayag, Godavari at Nasik and Shipra at Ujjain.
