KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS IN EDEN GARDENS

EMOTIONAL OUTBURST

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's outburst that he will quit public life if Team Anna's charges of corruption against him over coal block allotment are proved is more bravado than challenge. There is no need for him to make such statements. Whenever serious charges of corruption were levelled against his ministerial colleagues, he maintained silence and hardly made any attempt to investigate the charges. He acted only when his hands were forced by courts. Dr. Singh has to do much more than resorting to emotional outburst to prove to the people why so many scams have come about under his leadership.

Arun Chandra,
Mumbai

We are very happy to know that our Prime Minister is not corrupt. But that is not enough. His inability to control or check corruption under his leadership is harming the country. His government is unable to bring about a strong legislation against corruption. In the last eight years, corruption has increased manifold. While accepting that he is not corrupt, the nation wants him to be more action oriented in fighting corruption.

T.V. Nageswara Rao,
Visakhapatnam

Dr. Singh has reacted rather emotionally. He may wear his honesty as a badge of honour but he cannot shirk responsibility for the misdeeds committed under his leadership. Bhishma of Mahabharata is seen as an epitome of truth. However, his inaction when Draupadi was ill-treated by the Kauravas was a crime.

Nandakumar Venkatachary,
Chennai

Corruption is rampant. So are allegations of corruption against individuals, groups and organisations. The onus of proving the allegations is on those who level them. The person accused of corruption typically responds by challenging those making the charges. Evidence, as everyone knows, is more often totally absent. It is indeed very difficult to prove allegations of corruption.
M.J. Kuruvilla,
Kochi
For more than one reason, Dr. Singh's stand vis-à-vis the corruption charges levelled against him and some of his Ministers is unacceptable. In many ongoing corruption cases like the 2G, his initial stand was similar. Only circumstances, including Supreme Court intervention, proved him wrong. His statement that the government will submit a factual response once it receives the CAG report shows his reaction is premature.

P.R.V. Raja,
Pandalam

After presiding over one of the most corrupt regimes of the era, which has subjected the nation to untold miseries through the plunder of public wealth and natural resources, how can Dr. Singh assume such high moral ground? His posturing will not cut much ice with the aam aadmi . The onus is on him to prove his honesty, not indulge in rhetoric.

Anil Stephen Jones,
Aluva

Dr. Singh might appear to be indecisive but given the coalition compulsions (arm-twisting) and the global economic developments, he is doing a fairly decent job.

P.S.S. Murthy,
Hyderabad

Anna Hazare came into the limelight thanks to his ‘fight' against corruption. His plans of pushing the government to pass his version of the Lokpal Bill fell flat. It is unfortunate that many well known and learned individuals have joined his team but are unable to make any impact on the government. Instead of fighting a losing battle with the government, Team Anna should concentrate on educating people on the evils of corruption. Its strategy of making provocative statements against leaders like Dr. Singh will not have any effect. It will only alienate other team members.

M.V. Nahusharaj,
Bangalore

VICTORY BASH

While we appreciate the Kolkata Knight Riders for winning the IPL championship this year, the celebrations that followed in Kolkata — led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee — were uncalled for. It was a club team that won the championship.

R. Ramadurai,
Kumbakonam

It is difficult to understand how the victory of a club team in a cricket tournament can be projected as a new facet of ‘paribartan.' The team has Kolkata in its name but it was coached by an Australian, captained by a Delhi-ite, is principally owned by a Mumbaite and, more notably, had only two players from Bengal.

Pudukotah Sitaraman,
Chennai

ON FASIH MAHMOOD

This refers to the story, “Interpol warrant for Bangalore stadium attack suspect soon: police” ( The Hindu , May 29, 2012). It pertains to my husband, Mr. Fasih Mahmood, who has been missing since May 13, 2012. The story quotes my family as saying that: “he [Fasih Mahmood] knew Karachi-based jihadist, Riyaz Ismail Shahbandari, one of the Indian Mujahideen's three top commanders, as a student …”
This is absolutely false and hurtful as none of my family members has made any statement to this effect — either on record or off record. I sincerely hope that you will publish a corrigendum denying that such a statement was made.

Nikhat Parween,
New Delhi

Our correspondent replies:

Family sources said Mr. Mahmood studied at Bhatkal, where he had once met Riyaz at a social function. The Hindu quoted the family denying “he had any knowledge of, or association with terrorist activities.”

The story also clearly stated that there is no evidence Mr. Mahmood was involved in any form of criminal activity.
