SCHOLARSHIPS, GRANTS AND LOANS FOR SC, ST AND OBC STUDENTS IN WEST BENGAL

The following scholarships, grants and loans for SC, ST and OBC students in West Bengal are distributed by the Backward Classes Welfare Department, Govt. of West Bengal through the autonomous organizations under its fold.

1. Book Grant & Exam. Fees For SC/ ST students (including MSK students) of Classes V to X with annual Family Income up to Rs 36000/-. In 2010-11, the State Government will spend Rs. 56 crore to assist nearly 26 lakh students.

2. Maintenance Grant For SC/ ST students (day scholars) of Classes V to X (including MSK students) with annual Family Income up to Rs 36000/-. In 2010-11, the State Government will spend Rs. 24 crore to assist nearly 5 lakh students.

3. Hostel Grants @ Rs. 750/- per month.

a) School Attached Hostels: For SC/ ST students of Classes V to XII with annual Family Income up to Rs 36000/-.

b) Ashram Hostels: For SC/ ST students of Classes I to X with annual Family Income up to Rs 36000/-.

c) Central Hostels: For SC/ ST/OBC students of Classes V to XII with annual Family Income up to Rs 36000/-. In 2010-11, the State Government will spend more than Rs.83 crore 19 lakh to assist more than a lakh student in total staying in the hostels mentioned above.

4. Financial Assistance @ Rs. 400/- p.m For Meritorious SC/ ST students of Classes IX to XII with annual Family Income up to Rs 36000/-. In 2010-11, the State Government will spend Rs. 57 lakh 60 thousand to assist nearly 12,000 students.

5. For Girl Students Special Merit Scholarship for SC/ ST girl students of Classes V to X with annual Family Income up to Rs 36000/-. In 2010-11, the State Government will spend a sum of Rs. 45 lakh to assist nearly 3,000 students.

6. Upgradation of Merit For SC/ ST students of Classes IX to XII with annual Family Income up to Rs 36000/-. Amount paid per year: Rs. 15000/- for SC and Rs. 19500 for ST. In 2010-11, the State Government will spend nearly Rs. 70 lakh..

7. Post Matric Scholarship For SC/ ST students of Post- Secondary stages. Annual Family Income up to: Rs. 1,00000/- for SC and Rs 1,08,000/- for ST. Amount of scholarship varies. In 2010-11, the State Government will spend more than Rs. 107 crore to assist nearly 3 lakh 70 thousand students.

8. Pre and Post Matric Scholarship for OBC For OBC students. Annual Family Income up to: Rs. 44,500/-. Amount of scholarship varies. In 2010-11, the State Government will spend about Rs. 1 crore 76 lakh under this scheme.

9. Unclean Occupation Scholarships for students of families engaged with Unclean Occupation. Classes I to X. No Family Income ceiling. Amount of scholarship varies.

10. Loan for SC Students Educational Loan for Professional/ Technical Education in Govt. recognized institutes. Annual Family Income Ceiling: Rs. 40,000/- (rural areas)/ Rs. 55,000/- (urban areas). Maximum Loan Limit: Rs. 7.50 Lakh (within India) / Rs. 15 Lakh (abroad). 11. Loan for OBC Students Educational Loan for Professional/ Technical Education in Govt. recognized institutes. Annual Family Income Ceiling: Rs. 40,000/- (rural areas)/ Rs. 55,000/- (urban areas). Maximum Loan Limit: Rs. 5 Lakh. 12. Eklavya Schools Five Eklavya Model Residential Schools are functioning to provide quality education to ST students from class V to XII in (1) Bankura (2) Purulia (3) Burdwan (4) Paschim Medinipur and (5) Jalpaiguri. Two new EMRS are under construction in the Districts of Birbhum and Dakshin Dinajpur. The students are provided with scholarship, free food and lodging etc.

13. Pandit Raghunath Murmu Schools Nine such Bengali-medium residential schools are functioning in the districts of Bankura, Purulia, Burdwan, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur and Jalpaiguri for boys and girls of classes V to XII. The students are provided with scholarships, free food and lodging etc. Five new PRMS are under construction.

14. Coaching for JEE Free coaching classes for the Joint Entrance Examination for admission to Medical / Engineering courses are arranged for SC/ ST students. Each student is provided with a stipend of Rs. 300/- per month. At present, five such centres are functioning in Khatra, Man Bazar, Jhargram, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar. Seven such new Centres will shortly be started.
